    The Big Sleep
This fabulous production was superb, the acting fantastic and the stars involved shone, particularly Joan Collins who is good in anything. The plot of this book/film is a great one and the film is so perspicuous and so well executed. The pace never gives up and our interest is held until the end. Maybe old Robert Mitchum was rather tired, but then maybe that is part of his laid-back charm. The madcap Candy Clark was good to look at and Sarah Miles interesting. Old trooper James Stewart was stalwart and good to see. They don’t make ’em like that anymore !

    Yes, now I see…
I’m not sure what my favorite detective novel is, but Bogart in the Big Sleep has been my favorite detective movie. This one is almost as good.A secondary goal in producing this move was to clear up memorable ambiguities in the novel and first movie. Faulkner made a first attempt to do just that back in 1933 but censorship stood in the way. The plot remains faithful to the book and first movie, making changes only for this explanatory reason. And also too for the sake of resonance with the audience. For instance it was decided make more clear a central theme that Reagan is a sympathetic character. Thus the setting was changed to Britain allowing Reagan to more comfortably assume the identity of a somewhat noble Irish revolutionary. None of the particular choices given to, for instance, the make and model of cars each person drives, or say their wardrobe and hairstyle seem heavy handed. It is all done for coherence and clarity and should not become a distraction. Although it is a bit of just that to an audience not now contemporary with the culture of the ’70s.Cleaning and tidying up complex themes and plots in no way disrespects Chandler’s masterpiece. It is just changed a bit but nothing of real importance was touched. A very worthy edition.

    Don’t blame Bob
I don’t really like criticizing movies with Bob Mitchum as a star, but here goes. It was wrong, wrong, wrong. The place, time and altered storyline unalterably wrong. The acting, for the most part was very good. Bob was good (given what he had to work with) and Candy Clark (besides being very happy to appear so well in the nude) was excellent in the role Martha Vickers did such a great job at, hollywood movie code and all that. Sara Miles and Joan Collins obviously had their roles reversed. Nothing against Sara, but Joan is one of the sexiest women ever to grace the screen. In my humble but correct opinion, Joan’s acting has always been underrated. The problem becomes apparent when Winner (or whomever) decided to change the way this role was presented. Inexplicably stupid mistake. The princess they had playing Brody’s killer was well done, Jimmy Stewart was wasted ( nowhere as believable as Charles Waldren was), although The butler was very well done by Charles Brown. The presentation of the story was what messed everything up; in short, the producer AND director must’ve stoned out of their so-called minds. Change the name, re-fit the social approach and keep the acting talent, and they would’ve had a clear success. This was a low grade car wreck … Oh, maybe I’m nuts, but I didn’t have any problem figuring anything out with the original presentation, and yes, I’m prejudiced. The original was beautiful… sammy

A Movie Worth Seeing by Noir Viewers
The 1st half-hour drags, particularly in comparison with the Bogart-Bacall version. The editing throughout the movie is terrible–e.g.the scenes with “Lash” Canino, played by the great Richard Boone,–omit Canino’s sadistic expertise with a whip. In fact, even Canino’s possession of a whip is absent. In general, the editor confuses “jump-cutting” with illogical and abrupt cutting, giving the movie a disjointed narrative. On the other hand, Mitchum comes alive as the movie progresses. His final scenes in the film are excellent–even uninspired directing and bad editing cannot detract from his believable performance as a philosophic detective. As everyone knows, in real life Mitchum road the rails for 2 years and led the hobo’s life. This experience may help explain his very good performances in noir classics like “Out of the Past,” directed by Jacques Tourneur, written by Daniel Mainwaring (who scripted the 1955 screen play, “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” a movie released in 1956). If the BIG SLEEP (1978) viewer has patience and a good attention span–SLEEP is complex–the viewer will ultimately be rewarded with solid performances by Candy Clark, Boobe, and of course Mitchum.

Mitchum IS Philip Marlowe (LA or not)!
Plopping the quintessential LA PI (Philip Marlowe) in London is inexplicable. Mitchum, however, is by far the best Marlowe. And the story, as explicated here, is more intact and understandable than the classic version. Get past grieving over LA noir, and this is better than the Bogey-Bacall take.

If Mitchum it has to be good and this is classic, well delivered, present from daughter so I can indulge in Video evening. The scenes are great and the reproduction has enabled the real experience again which some digital do not. As Rhys Ifans said a right fest of video for tonight.
