Worth the money, accurate and long lasting!
Had one of these for many years, for checking cooking temps of food. Recently I was using it to check the air temp coming out of my a/c vents in the car. Perfect! Ordered a new one to put in the kitchen drawer and keeping one for car in case problems with A/C not cooling properly. Didn’t even have to change the battery in all those years it was being used and in kitchen drawer.

    Design is much IMPROVED!
I’ve used Taylor thermometers of this general style for years; I like them very much because they give good accurate results, quick results, and I can depend on them to verify the cooking status of whatever I’ve got. In the past I’ll get between five and ten years service before one will break because the electronics housing separates, either because I opened it to change the battery or it simply comes apart unintentionally, say because I dropped it. Sometimes when they come apart the wires connecting the two halves are exposed and pull off the circuit board. So when I got these I was surprised to see the design has changed; the “works” of the unit are a bit larger but they don’t come apart, there’s a well-sealed plug to remove in order to replace the battery and the electronics seem to be pretty well sealed up so it won’t come apart. This should ensure a much longer life to the unit; it also looks more rugged and liquid proof so it should withstand dropping or accidental spilling on it…good job, Taylor!!

A little slow but excellent for the price
I had one of these for 10 years and it worked remarkably well (until it didn’t.) This one is the same- just a bit slow (like maybe 10 secs before you get within a degree of actual) but given the low price, I think that’s pretty darn good. The ultrafast ones are now like $40- ridiculous. These CAN be opened to replace battery, but the internal electronics/wiring are very fragile, and there is some bending required to get the battery into the holder inside, so it requires some care! But batteries seem to last 5yr or so, so not a worry.

  4. My Name is Not Important

Compact, easy to use and read, but not calibrated out of the box
This is actually more compact than I had imagined but for food I imagine it would be fine to get a central temp for all but the most massive hunk of meat. It quickly comes to temperature and gives a pretty stable reading but be warned that with a 0.1F scale temps can jump around with the slightest change of probe position. But no recipe really needs a fractional F precision anyway so its not a big deal. The reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because it came uncalibrated out of the box – melting ice water measured as directed in the product instructions (not included with the package) consistently read 30.8F. So I busted out my tiny screwdriver to tweak the little plastic calibration adjuster. I noticed that the plastic screw head looked like someone had jammed a too small screwdriver in there and turned hard because the plastic was damaged. After a little tweaking I got it to 32.0F (which required a small anti-clockwise turn from reading too low before).I also noticed the packaging mentioned the battery had a plastic tab to remove before it would work but mine did not have one. I don’t think I got a returned item – the blister package was all sealed like it was new so I’m guessing whoever calibrated mine had a case of the Fridays and did a shoddy Friday afternoon job. I get that after doing a few thousand it probably gets real tedious but that doesn’t meet the “precision” in Taylor Precision. I think the lesson is if you want something guaranteed to be calibrated out of the box then get one that comes with a NIST calibration certificate and is marketed at “traceable”.

  5. The Good Life

    Accurate and easy to read
I bought one in 2017 and was very happy with it. I have a number of meat thermometers I use for barbecue and I like this one the best. I get a fairly fast reading, but it might take about 10 seconds to get it to stop at the last degree. Of course, normally you do not need to do that, and about 5 seconds is adequate. (I am still on the original battery).I mistakenly forgot to take it out of the meat before closing the cover and after about 5 minutes it deformed, but it still works. I just got a new one from Amazon. This is the exact same one I had before.Mainly for fun, I checked the calibration on both of them using ice water. They both read about 31 degrees, pretty good! I also tried boiling water and got about 211 on both. So, it looks like they are within one degree for the entire range! Unlike most thermometers, if you want better than one degree, they provide an adjustment screw, but I would not expect even an expensive thermometer to be more accurate than one degree.Especially, for the price, it is a great buy.

    Great product!
Being a chef, I use these things on a daily basis. The sheath that comes with this one is a better quality than even the standard dial Taylor bi-metallic stem thermometers. I like that it has a hole through it so that you can hold the thermometer over hot pots without burning yourself, simply by sticking it through the hole in the sheath and holding the other end of the sheath. Great work, Taylor! Also, the probe end is very thin, so you can get an accurate reading from foods without putting a large hole in them!Calibration is very easy, having a small knob with a slit in it that you turn when holding the sensing end in something with a known temperature (i.e. water just beginning to boil is 212 degrees F). You can use a long, skinny flat-head screwdriver to make calibration adjustments without having to get your hands so close to the boiling water that you burn yourself (as is the case with MANY thermometers). Also, the sheath is made of sturdy enough plastic that it doesn’t melt when held close to the edge of a hot pot like many thermometers sheaths do (including the analog version from Taylor).Overall, it is accurate, waterproof, sturdy, and easy to calibrate, all while remaining VERY affordable. 2 Thumbs UP!
