Set in Paris in the late 1940 s Sleeping Car to Trieste is a tense Cold War thriller brilliantly directed by John Paddy Carstairs. Post war Europe is in turmoil. Agent Zurta (Albert Lieven) and his beautiful accomplice Valya (Jean Kent) steal a diary with vital Cold War secrets from an embassy in Paris. During the theft Zurta murders a servant and to throw the authorities off his trail enlists the help of Karl (Alan Wheatley). But Karl double crosses Zurta and attempts to makes his escape on the Orient Express. As the train pulls out of the Gare de Lyon in Paris there are some very contrasting characters on board. Zurta and Valya are on Karl s trail but he is tucked away in a hidden compartment. As the train hurtles through southern Europe the eclectic bunch of passengers, which includes an adulterous couple and their idiot friend (David Tomlinson), a wealthy autocratic writer (Finley Currie) and a French police inspector, seem determined to foil Zurta in his quest for the diary. As the film reaches its climax will Zurta and Valya recover the diary and make their escape or will they be captured before they reach the Iron Curtain??

Love these old movies, particularly where trains are involved. They are social history as far as customs and costumes go. Traveled part of this route back in the 70’s although it was no longer the Orient Express and it brought back memories. There is a little suspense but the reason to watch it would be for the glimpse of an age gone by.

Totally boring slow moving plot
I love old movies and i don’t watch anything more recent than 1960 except on rare occasion. Old movies relied on character development, intelligent dalogue and story line not exploding bodies and moronic writing. But this movie is a total bore and not on the par with any of the great train movies like Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes or Agatha Christies’s Murder on the Orient Express (both versions with Albert Finney and later with Kenneth Brannaugh). Don’t waste your time on this one.

Enjoyable
The suspense takes place on The Orient Express and this film pays homage to the luxury and the formality of travelling on this special train from Paris to Istanbul. The suspense in this film highlights the stops of Trieste and Zagreb. I consulted the internet to map the route of The Orient Express and to find out where Trieste and Zagreb are, which made it an educational movie for me as well as a highly enjoyable one. The movie has a copyright of 1948, for those interested.There are flourishes here which foretell the lavish production of “Murder on the Orient Express”, released in 1974. The storyline is different from the Agatha Christie novel. But, there is the use of the gathering steam of the train engine to add to the sound. There is music that hints at mystery and intrigue. There are occasional outdoor scenes along the route.It is a slower pace than the action thrillers of today. This film is in the tradition of the cozy murder mystery, where there are only a few possible suspects. For some of us, this is an enjoyable entertainment.It is well done for this genre.

Imagine a tautly told tale. Imagine a well acted tale. Imagine a visually arresting tale. Imagine a tale with a beginning, a middle and an end. This movie caught us by surprise. While we expected something better than the standard monosyllabic dialogue of the great majority of current movies, Sleeping Car To Trieste was just absolutely fabulous!

I enjoyed the film
I enjoyed the film. It was an authentic way to revisit that era. It was released in 1948, not decades later trying to recreate post-war intrigue. Old films like this one are a good way to see and understand how things were. A modern production would be unable to capture the same feeling.

I’m a big fan of mystery movies aboard trains and this fit in well with ‘The Lady Vanishes’, the two versions of ‘Narrow Margin’, ‘Silver Streak’ and of course ‘Murder On The Orient Express’. There was even a moment in this movie which may have been an influence on ‘Silver Streak’. The style and plot are a bit creaky, and there were a couple of characters and sub-plots that could have been easily jettisoned. But overall a fun trip back in Time…..

Okay, but……………..
OMG! I couldn’t wait for this movie to be over! It’s absolutely jam packed with English character actors and it was great to see them so young and all together. The only reason I watched the whole movie was that I wanted to see what eventually happened to the villain and that didn’t happen until almost at the end of this 2-hour movie. Believe me I wanted to quit watching it but couldn’t because I wanted to see how it all worked out.It does have a good plot and the writing is pretty well done but I think someone saw it as a vehicle to get as many of their young English actors in front of a camera as possible so that bogged the movie down.I must admit the ending completely blew me away and even after wanting the movie to end quicker was delighted that I hung in until the end.

If you are a lover of old movies, then this is a treat for you. I was born and raised in Germany and this is the first time I saw an English speaking Albert Lieven. Another great story in which the Orient Express plays a role. I loved it!

Je recommande ce film qui est parfait en tout point, jeu des acteurs, diction, complexité de l’intrigue, drôlerie des situations… c’est une bonne découverte. Dommage qu’il n’y ai pas de BR pour cette version (c’est la 2è, l’autre datant d’avant-guerre). L’image est bonne pour un DVD.

A likeable train thriller which I would have enjoyed more had I not already seen ‘Rome Express’, of which this is an almost scene-by-scene remake. The production values are higher than in the 1935 original, and the script a deal more sophisticated. Attitudes to class and race are given a satirical grilling, which must have nettled quite a few of its original viewers, and the plot is strengthened by a more compelling McGuffin; a diary stolen from an embassy in Paris rather than a stolen painting, as in ‘Rome Express’. The performances are less barnstorming, more naturalistic, and the advances in film technology, plus the higher quality stock footage, give the piece a stronger atmosphere.

This surprise recent release was very much enjoyed , It had been a title on my not available list, I am a great fan of Derrick De Marney and was thrilled to see him in another film. Without him this film would have been pretty ordinary for me.Having revisited this film I must say that I actually enjoyed it even more, the spy plot is really secondary to a very British humored film of characters train bound across Europe.

This review is for the Strawberry Media DVDNice little movie, if a bit stilted in delivery. But it conjured up the charm of what it must have been like to travel in luxury on a steam train through Europe in those post WWII days, with a few thrills along the way, although films made in the 1930s did the job even more atmospherically. I like Jean Kent, but it was also good to see Alan Wheatley in a meaty role and Rona Anderson in what appears to be her first movie. Good picture and sound quality, but no subtitles for the hard of hearing.
