From Rainbow Chaos to Sapphire Queen: The Best Black Dye Iâve Ever Used
Let me set the scene: Itâs January 2025, and my head looked like a box of melted crayons. I had a full-head fantasy ombré jobâred, pink, and purple fading into each other like a sunset designed by a teenage unicorn. But the roots? Oh honey⦠my naturally dark brown (but not quite black) roots had grown out enough to look like I was wearing an ill-fitting toupee.I decided it was time to go dark. Like, ârebooting my identity and clearing the color historyâ dark. I picked up Schwarzkopf Color Ultime in 1.4 Sapphire Black, hoping it would do the impossible: cover over that chaotic rainbow mess and blend my almost-black roots without looking ashy, green, or flat. (Spoiler alert: it absolutely delivered.)Not only did it cover my fantasy colors beautifully, but it left my hair feeling soft, not crunchy like other permanent dyes tend to do. That post-dye conditioner? Liquid velvet. It actually made my hair feel better than before I dyed itâwhich feels illegal, but Iâm not questioning it.And let me tell you⦠it’s now July 2025 as I write this review. Thatâs 7 months later, and the black? Still looking chefâs kiss. You canât see the sapphire-blue undertone as strongly anymore, but the color hasnât faded into that dull, tired black that most boxed dyes do after a couple of months. You know that grayish, chalkboard-looking shade? Yeah, none of that.For context, Iâve dyed my hair black many times over the years. I’ve tried brands across the boardâfrom drugstore cheapies to salon snob specials. My favorite kind of black is the one with blue or purple undertones, and this shade absolutely nails it. Most others? They betray you around month three. This one? Beautiful color!
The Sapphire Black is such a beautiful color! This was my first time trying this dye and I am so happy with how it turned out! It’s a very deep blue in the sun and indoors more of a lustrous black. The color took differently to my natural highlights giving it a multidimensional tone that I am in love with. I have naturally dark brown (and some grays ð«£) hair. The coverage of this dye is phenomenal, though a bit messy – definitely worth the effort. I have long hair, so I used 2 boxes and it was plenty to thoroughly saturate it. The smell wasnt overpowering either which is a nice plus! Use a dark towel or one you don’t care about after washing, and wipe any skin that is exposed to the dye as you go if you don’t want stains on your skin. A bit of bleach took the few drip marks off my white sink easily. Overall super happy and would purchase again.

Great gray coverage!
This hair dye is fantastic! It doesnât leave a blue sheen, it just has a blue base so that itâs not going to pull red in the sunlight, which is exactly what I wanted. Very much a cool-leaning neutral black. I have long hair so I purchased two boxes, which worked out perfectly for me! I do recommend buying two if your hair is past shoulder length to be super safe. Fast processing time in my hair, and it covered all of my grays! I left it on for about 5 extra minutes over the recommended processing time to ensure gray coverage. Love it, will be buying again!

Very Saturated black!
Gorgeous, saturated, deep black shade. Iâve been dying my hair black for 38 years since I was a 15 yr old baby goth, and this is a great color and formula. Covered my streaks of grey/white hair perfectly, although I did leave it on a bit longer just in case. About 50 minutes total. Iâm not a fan of the dimethicone in this conditioner because stuff like that can leave my hair pretty dry (I also live in a dry desert). However, the conditioner did leave my hair soft and shiny so I canât complain.This color seems to stay wet the entire time and I think thatâs why it IS messier than most. Wear an old shirt! Lay some garbage bags over your countertops and an old towel on the floor & keep a bleach cleaner nearby with paper towels for any accidental splats on countertops and floors, and just keep away from doors and walls entirely. If you have a box of latex gloves, use those instead of the provided gloves. Also use gloves again if at all possible, when rinsing out in the shower. I can see this absolutely staining nails (I used a clear coat and heavy nail oil in addition to gloves because Iâve dealt with staining in the past)I also suggest having some AHA or lactic acid facial pads & a nubby washcloth available for face, ears and neck, and a loofah or scrubby of some sort for body on hand, because as careful as I am, it still stained my ears, forehead and the nape of my neck and took some real effort to remove. Bonus points if you have an AHA body wash (it stained forearms where gloves didnât reach).Hope this helps! This hair color is beautiful. Also my hair is about 1/2â below my shoulders, medium thick leaning thin, and one box just barely worked to cover my 3â of growth and former faded black dye.

Went from dark brown (with a few greys) to this sapphire black. I’ve used this same one long ago, I forgot how much I love the colour. It’s a very deep black, with a hint of blue in the sunlight. Great coverage. I keep getting compliments about how shiny my hair looks! Holding up well after 1 week so far. Will definitely be buying again when I’m due for a refresh.

I was a little worried about the color and the brand because I have never tried this one before, but I love it. If you don’t want a deep black sapphire then my advice don’t buy this color it’s very dark but my hair feels so soft after using this brand I was really surprised.
