An Evidence-Based Guide that Helps Chronic Pain Sufferers Discover the Key to Creating a Rich, Meaningful Life

Written by physical therapist Joe Tatta, this workbook and guide is for people experiencing chronic pain and the professionals who treat them.

Using up-to-date research and contemporary pain education, Dr. Tatta helps readers understand the causes of pain. He then introduces them to ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), which is similar to mindfulness and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). ACT is a time-tested, science-backed approach that has helped thousands of people experiencing chronic pain, as well as those suffering from stress, depression, anxiety, trauma and addiction.

Other chronic pain management books often fail to provide steps that readers can take when it comes to managing chronic pain―Radical Relief uses metaphors, colorful imagery and more than 40 mindfulness activities to help readers identify the blocks that may be keeping them stuck and offers tools for taking meaningful, purposeful action toward a more fulfilling life.

This guide is a vital resource that provides a safe and effective alternative to common mindfulness and pain treatments.

The best book on understanding and managing pain on the market
I have been a physiotherapist here in New Zealand for 30 years specializing in persistent pain management. During my career, I have attended numerous pain-related courses in various parts of the world and read countless books on the topic. This is, without doubt, the most easily digestible and practically useful resource I have found. I would highly recommend this to both practitioners involved with pain management and anyone suffering from persistent pain.

    Live well alongside your pain!
I’m a University lecturer, clinician and person living with fibromyalgia – Dr Tatta’s book is a treasure! Although it would be fabulous to think we can all get rid of, or reduce pain, there are many people who will need to learn how to live alongside their pain. Sadly, this isn’t something we hear a lot about, and most of the self help books for pain are aimed at reducing or eliminating pain. This book is different. This book opens up the possibility of learning how to relate to your pain differently: to live a life aligned with your values, and to perhaps even flourish in the presence of pain.I received a copy of Radical Relief from Dr Tatta, so this is a “gifted” review – but I would have bought this book anyway. The good things about it? Clear, straightforward language, gorgeous illustrations, and plenty of actions you can take as a person living with pain. If you’re a clinician, reading this will show you ways you can enhance your patient’s lives and help them focus on what matters to them. The not so good things? Well, many of my patients are not readers or writers, so any book is possibly not going to work for them. I think the book would work best for those people if a clinician worked through the book alongside them. All in all, I highly recommend Radical Relief to anyone who finds themselves needing to deal with pain that doesn’t go away as expected. Whether your pain remains or not, you’ll learn about approaches that make life worthwhile. If you’re a clinician perhaps just dipping your toe into ACT, this book offers practical steps you can take with the people you hope to help while demystifying the ACT approach.

Absolutely must have book for both practitioners AND those with chronic pain.
As a physical therapist that specializes in chronic pain, I’ve always felt there to be a huge piece of the puzzle missing, and couldn’t quite put my finger on what it was…until I come across Joe Tatta & his work. His work, which is presented in a beautiful format, is condensed down into an incredibly actionable guide through this book. He includes the latest & greatest research – but in a way that is usable to the layperson & practitioner alike. Knowledge is great – but without the ability to take action on it, it lacks much benefit, especially when you’re suffering from chronic pain. And when you’re in pain – or – a busy practitioner – you don’t have the time/capacity to sift through huge amounts of research & watch endless lectures to try to obtain what you need. Dr. Tatta addresses this common issue by doing the legwork for you, and distilled down his huge amount of knowledge into actionable steps. With each, very short, chapter, being a different lesson, most with an experiential component (which is what allows change to actually occur).Clinicians can guide their patients with chronic pain through the applicable chapters, while chronic pain sufferers can use this as a resource from the safety of their own homes. For those in the chronic pain world – this book has been a long, long needed resources that provides original information & exercises, and is an absolute must have in the clinic! Be prepared for this book to change lives.

Learn how to approach pain at it’s source!
The use of cognitive techniques for pain relief is the new must-have for anyone that deals with people in pain, or anyone that experiences pain. Dr. Tatta’s “Radical Relief” gives you the tools and the blueprints to apply proven cognitive practices. The short chapters make it perfect for trying out the activities and internalizing the concepts.I have been using the techniques contained in this book with my patients and on myself for a year now, and the difference it makes is empowering. As a lifelong athlete (I am now 51 years old), I had stopped training and competing due to chronic hip and back pain. After 6 years of not being able to compete, I was able to participate in a race for the first time this past fall. I felt great during and after the race!I have seen my patients, with whom I had tried everything, go from months of spending the day curled up in bed with pain, to exercising several times a week, returning to work, smiling, and socializing again. If pain, and finding pain relief, has become the main focus of your life. If everything else in your life has taken a back seat to your pain, this book will help you get on the road toward the life you want to live, and the human being that you want to be.

Chronic Pain Relief Using the Mind – Brilliant!
This is a brilliant book – Joe Tatta has been one of the “go-to” pain experts for decades, and this book does not disappoint. User-friendly for chronic pain sufferers, as well as a fantastically useful resource for health care practitioners of all kinds (I am a physical therapist with my own chronic pain issues, a health coach, and a functional nutrition counselor), this book breaks the process of overcoming chronic pain down into 5 Parts. Packed with both educational teachings and experiential exercises and activities – as well as beautiful color illustrations to make clear the metaphors and visualizations described within – this amazing book teaches us how to engage with our own pain differently, and then how to take action and get back to living our lives fully.I will be sharing this book with friends, family, clients – and using it for my own benefit. Thank you for writing this book, Dr. Joe!
