Highly Recommended Book, Provides Information Otherwise Censored by the FDA
Over the Counter Natural Cures by Shane Ellison MSThanks to the draconian and unconstitutional “Gag Rule” by the FDA, nutritional supplement manufacturers are prohibited from informing the public about the supplements they make. By keeping the public in the dark, and censoring information about how supplements are safer, more effective and less expensive than drugs, the FDA reveals its true mission, to protect the profits of the drug industry. The beauty of Shane Ellison’s book is it fills in this censored information, discussing the top ten nutritional supplements and how they treat and prevent common illnesses. Mr. Ellison’s background and training make him imminently qualified. He was trained as an organic chemist, and actually worked designing drugs in the labs of the pharmaceutical industry.A recurring problem with inexpensive supplements is quality. Many are simply not worth buying because they are adulterated with fillers and may not contain the proper amounts of the nutrients. Again, Mr. Ellison goes the extra step for his readers with an independent certificate of analysis on each recommended supplement posted on his web site. In addition, the book is carefully referenced with links to the medical literature. Here is the list of supplements discussed in the book:Alpha Lipoic Acid is presented as a key antioxidant maintaining the skin young and wrinkle free. The mixed form of Alpha lipoic acid from Spring Valley is mentioned, also useful for prevention and treatment of diabetic neuropathy. Combine this with acetlyl -L- carnitine from Nature Bounty at Walgreens for a more robust effect.Sadly, our bodies are contaminated with hundreds of toxic chemicals thanks to deregulation of environmental protection laws by the Bush administration, leading to even more chemical pollution of the environment. How can we help our liver eliminate these nasty substances? An herbal supplement call Milk Thistle from Spring Valley does the job.Preventing heart disease with statin drugs, Mr Ellison tells us, is a frustrating endeavor. The drugs cause severe adverse effects, and a review of the statin drug studies shows the data has been manipulated, articles ghostwritten, and more hype than substance. For real prevention of heart disease, Mr. Ellison discards the cholesterol hypotheses as an unproven myth, and instead recommends lowering Homocysteine with a natural folic acid in Brewer’s Yeast from Lewis Labs at Whole Foods, avoiding the Franken Chemical form of folic acid commonly found in cheap vitamins. Adding vitamin C in the form of acerola from Now Foods, is also part of the heart disease prevention program. For controlling blood pressure without drugs, Mr Ellison recommends herbal Hawthorne from GNC.For people with insomnia addicted to ambien and xanax in order to sleep, Mr Ellison recommends discarding the addictive sleeping pills, and instead use Natural Valerian Root from Spring Vallery sold at Wal-mart. For Prostate trouble, use Saw Palmetto from Puritans Pride, or the GNC Men’s formula. For improving vision, use Vitamin A. Mr Ellison recommends fresh chicken liver high in vitamin A, or else CarotenAll from Jarrow Formulas at Vitamin Shoppe. For cancer prevention, he suggests turmeric from Jarrow Formula – Curcumin 95. For controlling blood sugar he recommends cinnamon capsules from Spring Valley sold at Wal Mart.Mr Ellison has no financial interest in any of these companies, so there are no conflicts of interest to report.Judging from its title, the book sounds too good to be true, yet Mr. Ellison is true to his mission, and delivers the goods, providing valuable information not otherwise available in the mass media or from supplement manufacturers thanks the FDA Gag rule. Ellison’s book covers only the first ten of thousands of supplements available on the market. He has much work to do covering the rest of them in a sequel.Jeffrey Dach MD

    Nutrient Logic Rocks!
I’m not a conspiracy theorist, I’m a conspiracy realist. Ever since reading Salt, Sugar, and Fat a few years ago, I’ve understood how Big Food, Big Ag, and Big Pharma represent a colossal conflict of interest. Shane Ellison’s Over the Counter Natural Cures is written in a very frank, straightforward manner. No B.S.He tells us why what we’ve been taught to believe is a fallacy, what the negative impact of the prescriptions we’ve been given by physicians do to our minds and bodies and then, most importantly what to do about it.I believe most doctors still believe they’re doing what’s in the patient’s best interest. There are exceptions. Ellison doesn’t claim to be an expert in medicine but when those who are experts in medicine close their minds to alternative treatments – especially those treatments with a far less benefit-to-risk-ratio, something is very wrong. EVERYONE should read the Hippocratic Oath (excerpt here: .. I WILL FOLLOW that system of regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patients, and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous. I will give no deadly medicine to any one if asked, nor suggest any such counsel..”Yes, there are many authors, translations and suggestions that Hippocrates didn’t write the oath but that a group of people contributed. I wasn’t there so I don’t know. But, Hippocrates is quoted as saying “Let Food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Shane Ellison encourages this along with safe, affordable nutrients – most often with no known risk and a good deal of research backing up their efficacy.Sure, these are not profit-generating behemoths, they can’t be patented (though that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been tried- think turmeric) and so there’s no money in promoting them. I respect Ellison’s awakening as an organic chemist (earning the big bucks and all the perks that Pharma giants pay their people) to the realization that what he was doing wasn’t helping millions but instead, could cause serious harm.Ellison’s “nutrient logic” makes perfect sense to this reader and I applaud his willingness to defy convention and to become The People’s Chemist. As such, he will continue to use his expertise as an organic chemist to create formulations that might improve upon existing nutrients and there is no harm in that. I know some readers balk at his occasional use of profanity and there are complaints about customer service not exhibiting diplomacy. I haven’t experienced this but understand how some folks will be put off. As he’s said in less delicate terms, then don’t buy his products. Period.

Written with added fun and humour. The best approach to getting readers interested in looking after themselves, with the added bonus that you can take everything in here, to the bank. Totally on the level HELP yourself to better health. You can’t go wrong, and at this price, it’s a STEAL If only he sold or was “allowed” to sell his stuff in Canada, we’d all be better off. I’m Canadian, and totally disgusted with our government that chooses NOT to allow GOOD Medicine into the country so the SICK can benefit. All intended to give Western Medicine the gross monopoly of selling us poison, and telling us we NEED it to get better. It’s a gross distortion of reality. Just like the Author of this book, Shane Ellison says, Big Pharma is in it for the MONEY FIRST… certainly not people’s health and well being. I have a few problems myself that western medicine can’t touch. There’s NO pill or any drug that helps me. Yet when I get to try some of the REAL stuff, IT WORKs and I feel great. We live on the wrong side of the Pond. Europe has a FAR better system, and you get to CHOOSE which format is right for you. Here, you get ONE choice, which is not a choice. Get this book, it will help you to learn how to help yourself!

This book was really worth every cent spent. Aside from not understanding the technical chemistry language at times (not ever having studied science that deeply) it was very helpful. It also certainly reinforced my suspicions of Big Pharma’s (do they deserve the capital letters?!) total focus on getting rich, and not in any way interested in curing anyone.Last year I went in to see a doctor (mine was away at the time) and while she was writing out prescriptions she suddenly came out with, “these are our bread and butter’! I was dumbfounded, and so from that time on have gradually weaned myself off my BP and statin medications. I am now endeavouring to heal myself through natural ways and means as best I can, and with all of Shane’s wonderful knowledge. This book is full of those ways, and I can honestly say I feel much more reassured that I don’t have to feel guilty about not seeing a doctor anymore. We are so lured into that false sense of ‘security’. As Shane says, they don’t want us to die, but they don’t want to cure us, either!
