A VERY effective means of controlling chronic pain in a natural way, with no prior meditation experience required.
After living with chronic pain for a year, and trying every pain treatment modality available to me, I turned to meditation as a last ditch effort to make my chronic physical pain bearable. I will be honest, I haven’t listened to the first CD at all, I’ve skipped straight to the tracks on the second CD that get into the actual meditative exercises. Mr. Kabat-Zinn’s voice is unbelievably soothing…almost too soothing (I fall asleep listening to the CD more often that I would like, though I guess that means it is working, since I used to be kept up by the chronic pain). Today, after returning to work in my office, after working from home for a year, I felt quite a bit of pain. In my chair, I practiced a couple of the meditation exercises at my desk and immediately felt my pain lessen. The best part, unlike pain medication, the meditation did not make me sleepy, and unlike other external means of dealing with pain, no one was the wiser that I was practicing breathing and visual imagery techniques while working. I would highly recommend this CD for people living with chronic pain who are trying to deal with the pain in a natural, low-key way. No meditation experience needed for the practices/exercises taught in this CD.

Worked great to relieve anxiety and sleeplessness
I don’t have physical pain, per se, but my husband and I plan start a family (at some point) and I thought I could use this during labor (I’m an extreme planner, what can I say). Although I haven’t used this for child birth, I’ve already been able to put these meditation exercises to use in my day to day life.I sometimes experience sleeplessness where I wake up, start thinking pointless thoughts, and can’t get back to sleep. I’ve been able to use some of these practices to help me get back to sleep and it works every time, and very quickly. The exercise of not letting thoughts distract you and paying attention to your breath is an invaluable skill and can be used in many ways. I’ve also used this for mild headaches, and have found it works like a charm. I feel very encouraged to better learn these exercises for more major pains in my future.

Pleasant and useful–not what I expected
First off, I’ve only listened to audio CD’s for relaxation (distraction!) twice before, and both times ended up both bored and irritated. One had a woman with a sing-song voice who spoke so slowly and childishly I wanted to break the CD player (yes, I was a bit edgy). The other was just a sort of New Age gibberish telling me to focus and fly away. Blah. So, I purchased this one with a last hope for relief. I don’t sleep well because of stress and pain from surgery last year, both of which seem worse at night. I wanted something calm to send me to dreamland without an Ambien. Since this focused on mindfulness AND pain relief, I gave it a shot. It’s interesting…the voice (I’m assuming it’s Kabat-Zinn himself) is calm without being annoying. It’s like a quiet conversation, soothingly paced and yet it holds your interest. The biggest surprise is that on Disc one, he discusses studies that show that conventional wisdom to focus on anything BUT your pain only works on minor pain. He explains that instead, those with serious pain issues do better to focus on that pain to work with it. “Befriend it” he says. Okay, befriending it may not be possible yet (my pain and I are not on speaking terms). But it’s more with accepting and knowing that the pain is only part of the picture and can be tolerated, with knowledge, that is his point. This was helpful because everything I had ever heard or read was to picture it not existing…or to be on that infamous quiet beach with slowly breaking waves that everyone else seems to suggest I mentally visit.Disc two is more guided listening and instructions. Both are useful. I did fall asleep a few times in the second one. He does suggest listening to them over and over again, and even if not with relief, but for repetition. I could see benefits without even having to listen several times. Now, at bedtime, I pop one of the two CD’s in and listen to the quiet voice.Another benefit is that there is no religious slant to it, so one of any faith or not can enjoy it without rolling their eyes or feeling condescended to. He never chides the listener or tells them to be stronger than they are…after all, pain IS pain, he never dismisses it as trivial.Highly recommend. I would have gave it five stars if there had just been a few more practices…

JON KABAT-ZINN IS THE CONTEMPORARY MASTER OF MINDFULLNESS PRACTICES
Jon has been involved in the effect of Mindfulness Practices for the past thirty years. These practices are designed to re-organize pain or stress patterns by incorporating the power of Neuroplasticity in the brain. His workshops are world-renowned and effective and are always booked to capacity. This CD allows the individual to practice these principles at home outside, of the workshop. I use the CD twice each day for chronic pain moderation, and I can honestly say that within the past month of committed listening, I am noticeably more comfortable, and have been able to expand my daily activities. His methodology works if one can commit to the practice. It’s all in the mind!

    Befriend Your Pain
Jon Kabat-Zinn is not only an expert in teaching meditation for pain, he is also the founding director of his pain clinic at the University of Massachusetts. The meditations on these two discs are very helpful, especially for those of us who live with chronic pain. As well as providing guided imagery and breathing practices to relax you (we all know the more stressed out one becomes, the pain increases), he teaches seven principles which help us understand how our pain relates to our lives. One of the practices is to “send out the welcome mat” for you pain because it will come and trying to push it away makes it worse. I cannot recommend this 2-set CD highly enough. It has helped me greatly.

You really need to take a course or two on this Mindfulness method. The book just doesn’t give you every tool. The courses are everywhere if you look out for them.Otherwise good book.

If you suffer with any form of pain, from chronic to a constant niggle, then this brilliant CD is a must. Jon has a very relaxing reassuring voice and guides you through a range of mindful meditations from very short ones to longer ones meaning you can always fit one into your day and work slowly to be more in control of your pain. Even if you don’t have a major pain issue the CD is very helpful in helping you connect with things like muscle tension and relieving a whole host of everyday aches and pains through the powerful approach of mindfulness meditation. Listening to Jon and becoming more aware of your body, breathing and thoughts is empowering and has brought a true sense of calmness to my life and has taught me not to focus in on the pain but to release it and feel more in control of my life.

My mother recently retired (for the second time) after spending her entire life working hard for others. To celebrate her retirement she went away with my father on holiday. The next day they had to return as she had experienced an unbearable pain at the base of her back that did not go away. She has been to have scans etc. and is still in the process of finding out exactly what is wrong. I thought “how typical of what life can throw at you!” However, the point of my long winded story is that she has been unable to sleep without pain killers and a hot water bottle. The pain killers that were prescribed for her interrupted her digestive system completely. In despair I bought her this CD. She listens to the CD and does the practices prescribed each night and now sleeps comfortably. She tells me that she could not be bothered with it one night and as a consequence had to take tablets to help her sleep. So, although I have not listened to the CD myself I can say that it has had a great effect on my mother who has been in a lot of pain. Furthermore, I suggested that after each mindfulness session she could do one of the Ignatian Spiritual exercises – these are imaginative contemplations on the gospels. She tells me that the CD has greatly enriched her prayer life. So I am greatly thankful to Jon Kabat-Zinn and for how his CD has helped my mum. I would just like to say though that it is not a cure for my mum’s pain. She is still getting to the bottom of it at the hospital. Nevertheless, these meditations have been greatly helpful to her.

I expected more meditations on these two cds however there are only a couple and the content is rather skimpy as well. Nevertheless it is always inspiring to hear Jon Kabat-Zinn.

I have found it very helpful and have already recommended it to a friend. Jon Kabat-Zinn has a very soothing voice and does help with pain relief, although it is not always possible to forget the pain.
