What is oVertone? Is it dye?
oVertone hair colors are color-depositing hair masks that condition while you color. oVertone Coloring Conditioners are curly-friendly, vegan and cruelty-free. They’re also made without peroxide, ammonia, bleach, phthalates, parabens and PPDs.
What is the difference between Coloring and Daily Conditioner?
Coloring Conditioners are the first step. Use them for initial color application and reapply every 1-2 weeks (as needed).
Daily Conditioners are made to help maintain your shade in between color applications. Use them in the shower in 3 mins or less.
How long does it last?
How long oVertone lasts in your hair will depend on the porosity, texture, and health of your hair, along with UV exposure levels and how often you shampoo.
Because it is a semi-permanent hair color, oVertone may leave a subtle, permanent tint.
Do I need to bleach first?
If you want to use a Pastel shade we suggest pre-lightening hair, even if you’re a natural blonde.
If your hair is dark brown or black and you want vivid results—you’ll need to pre-lighten in order to achieve bold or noticeable color payoff.
Pastel? Vibrant? Extreme? For Brown Hair? What do those mean?
Pastel: Subtle shades for platinum/light blonde hair
Vibrant: Bright fantasy colors for platinum – light brown hair
Extreme: Vivid shades for blonde – light brown starting shades
For Brown Hair: Rich, subtle colors for light to medium brown hair

Customers say
Customers find the hair dye conditioner soft and shiny after use, with a pleasant smell and good conditioning properties. The application process is easy, and the color receives mixed feedback – while some find it vibrant, others report it doesn’t color their hair at all. The stain resistance is also mixed, with some customers noting it washes out easily while others mention it stains hands and fingers. Customers consider the product not worth the cost.

Worked fantastic for me! Naturally level 3 dark brown hair with some greys
I have naturally level 3 dark brown hair with a little grey. It’s also very oily so I wash/condition it every day with an Italian-made, small batch, sulfate-free shampoo/conditioner set. My hair is 3 inches past my shoulders, naturally pin-straight, sleek, and fine but I have a lot of hair and it’s extremely healthy – never been dyed and I use heat sparingly. It took half the jar to do my entire head. Purple For Brunettes is highly pigmented and a gorgeous, deep plump purple in the container. I adore the scent, too – it’s a fresh sort of lemon-tea tree kind of scent and it lasts on the hair. I personally adore it but if you’re sensitive to scents, you might have trouble. The product is thick and I recommend sectioning the heck out of your hair and starting from the roots, moving downward. You absolutely need to wear gloves, cover surfaces with old towels or clothes you don’t mind getting stained, and use one of those dye applicator brushes you see in salons to help get at tricky areas. I had a hard time combing it through my hair but I attribute that to newbie error and not a fault of the product.I got some on my ears and hairline/neck but a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad you’d use to remove makeup plus a bit of scrubbing (just a teeny bit) worked well to remove the dye. My hands and nails got a little tinted when I was rinsing out the dye but that went away with some extra scrubbing with Dawn — just make sure to moisturize your hands afterwards! After rinsing and adding some heat protectant spray, I dried my hair and then used my flatiron to put a slight curl in the ends for some movement. The color payoff was noticeable even on my super dark hair — this product will NOT lighten your hair. In fact, it made my hair look a half-shade darker which I freaking LOVE. It also dyed my grey hairs to a mix of amethyst and deep magenta — warm and bright without any brass undertones. My hair was so soft, silky, conditioned without being weighed down and I’m so happy I went with this product. Absolutely zero damage to my virgin hair. The bleed is real, though. I’m not taking any stars off for it as I knew it would happen and went into this with realistic expectations of what I would achieve since this is a color depositing conditioner and not a permanent or semi/demi dye. It bleeds daily and the effect of the purple for me was dimmed by day 5. Just something to be aware of. However, I’m good with that as I like that I can play with color without risking damage.FWIW: I got the Purple For Brunettes conditioner from oVertone, as well, and that’s doing a good job at helping me keep some purple in my hair.Overall: I love this product and will keep buying it until I get sick of it. I personally think it’s perfect for naturally dark brunettes who want to play with purple without a huge commitment AND who have realistic expectations for a purple tint that’s noticeable in the light rather than a 180 degree change to their hair color.

Great product!
I recently had my hair colored teal and wanted to use Overtone to keep the color vibrant. It worked beautifully! This was my process: make sure your hair is clean but damp, I used a spray bottle to dampen as I went. I sectioned off my hair and applied liberally to each section. I used clips to clip up each section after applying. I then used a disposable shower cap to cover and minimize mess as I waited. The directions say 10-15 minutes until you can wash, but I waited 60 minutes as I wanted to ensure vibrant color. When time was up I rinsed with cold water until clear but did not shampoo and then dried my hair. Itâs beautiful and super soft! The process was time consuming but if you’re patient and carful youâll have really nice color. Donât forget to use gloves!!

Perfect for bleached hair
I bought the coloring conditioner in the shade Vibrant Pink. I had bleached my hair between the levels 8-10. My virgin hair was originally a level 1 (dark brown, almost black). So while the color obviously didn’t show on my virgin roots, it deposited color very well on my bleached hair.My hair length reaches the middle of my back. I had to use an entire tub. I think for a more even application, I would have needed 1 tub plus at least 1/4 of a second tub. Be mindful of applying product on the back of your head. I neglected that area so while the color did show up, it was peachier and less pink than the front strands of hair that I could easily see and reach. The gloves provided in the box absolutely suck – they’re thin and come apart easily and have holes in the sides which defeat the purpose of protecting your hands and render them useless. Luckily I have a stash of disposable latex gloves. You will absolutely need them to protect your hands from getting stained. Immediately wipe surfaces if product splashes onto it. Small amounts of product lightly stained my white bathtub pink. Not the end of the world but something to be mindful of.Application is fairly easy. The consistency of the conditioner is like a goopy cream. It doesn’t drip so it’s easy to apply, but because it’s thick it’s hard to spread. This is why you have to use a lot of product to cover a lot of surface area.Any coloring product will smell unpleasant. This conditioner has a mint fragrance in it that attempts to cover up the unpleasant chemical smell. It makes it more bearable. Some people have stated that the smell is like toothpaste. I think it’s like a combination of chemicals and toothpaste. If you have sensitive skin like me, do a patch test on an inconspicuous area like behind your ear. Or apply a thin layer of Vaseline on the skin touching your hairline, including your temples, behind the ears, and your neck. For more protection, apply Saran Wrap on top of the Vaseline. I’m pretty lazy though and applied it directly to my hair and scalp, being mindful of not letting the product touch too much of my skin. My application wasn’t perfect so small areas of my skin had product on it. Those areas, plus my scalp, became slightly itchy and red. The itchiness disappeared a few hours after washing my hair out.I applied the product and loosely clipped it up with a large hair claw, then sat in a bath for about 40 minutes while watching videos to pass the time. The instructions say to leave it in for much less time. I don’t think 5-15 minutes will make a significant difference and will likely result in wasted product. I highly recommend leaving it on for at least 30 minutes, max 45-60 minutes.Rinsing out the product with water was easy. Took maybe a good minute to get it out. Although your scalp and hair strands will feel slightly heavy and sticky due to the deposited color afterwards, I highly discourage people from washing their hair with shampoo and following up with a separate conditioner. Shampoo and conditioners can make the color bleed out more. Everytime you wash with even just water, color will bleed. After first time application, just rinse with cool water, dry, and style, then use dry shampoo to avoid washing your hair often. This will prolong the life of the color. When the hair is wet, the color looked like a deep pink/light red. When fully dry, the color is a beautiful and soft pink, with a shade somewhere in between cotton candy and pastel pink. It’s not actually too vibrant, despite its name. This was exactly the color I was going for though. After reading reviews on the pastel pink conditioner, which were very abysmal, I’m glad I went with vibrant pink instead. With 1-2 washes, the color gradually fades into a beautiful and subtle rose gold. With 3-4 washes, the color is almost gone. With subsequent washes, the color is entirely gone. If you wash hair every two days while relying on dry shampoo in between washes, you can expect the color to last for about a week.If you want to maintain the pink, you’ll have to wash hair even less and/or reapply product every few washes. At $32 a tub for about a week’s worth of color, it’s pricey and not very financially sustainable. Knowing this, I bought the color just to have one week’s worth of a final hurrah before I’d permanently dye my hair back to black. I had fun while it lasted and I have no regrets!I have not tried other colors in this product line so I can’t speak on their quality. This product did its job and I was happy with the results. I’d recommend this to anyone with hair bleached to levels 8 or above looking for a week’s worth of a whimsical and feminine color.

I have dark brown/almost black Asian hair thatâs natural on top and had been ombre bleached and dyed purple at the bottom. This conditioner worked wonders after my original purple had washed out, and the colour lasted way longer (3+ weeks? and this is without using Overtoneâs recommended daily conditioner) than my original dye job did. The immediate colour is quite a vibrant dark purple on my bleached hair, but after about 10 washes starts to fade into a nice lighter purple shade mixed with some brown that starts to show through. On my natural dark hair, the purple appears as a subtle tinge thatâs mainly visible under direct light/sunlight. I have mid-length, thin hair so the entire jar lasted me about 4 applications over the course of mid-October to start of Jan. Would recommend to those with lightened/lighter hair as a great way to try out fun colours! Those with totally dark hair, itâll be a subtle look – plenty of video reviews on youtube will give you an idea of what to expect!

Did not damage my hair, Its nice.I have thick curly hair and the bottle only lasted 2 uses and was not enough to apply. I had pink highlights that wore off and I thought this would restore my pink highlights but it didnât. It just added a tiny bit of color that wasnât really that noticeable. I wouldnât buy this again but I think itâs a good product overall. Just not whatâs promised.
