Tchaikovsky – The Sleeping Beauty / Durante, Solymosi, Dowell, Royal Ballet

Fairy tale, Tchaikovsky music, the Royal Ballet = Pure Delight
My wife and are not ballet enthusiasts….or I should say, we weren’t until we saw this production of “Sleeping Beauty.” The dancing was amazing and especially the male dancers who were acrobatic. It was also a wonderful take on the famous fairy tale with tons of famous characters coming in for a beautiful and funny finale.The evil fairy was a total trip!!!

I’ve watched almost all the Sleeping Beauty-ballets I could and whats making this my favorite is simple: it’s just awesome.I know almost nothing about ballet techniques so I can’t say what makes a good pirouette and what not, but I can see when there’s passion and energy in a performance and this really have it. The performers looks like they’re enjoying themselves.Viviana Durante really fits the role of princess Aurora. She looks so young and innocent.Anthony Dowell as the evil fairy Carabosse is really scary and intimidating.The lilac fairy, Benazir Hussein, is a real treat to look at, she is a real contrast to Carabosse, being loving and good yet authoritative and strong when she needs to be.Zoltán Solymosi was alright although he looks a bit big next to smallish Viviana Durante.I also want to highlight William Tuckett and Elizabeth McGorian as the king and queen. They don’t dance a single step but their acting is great. I’ve seen really wooden acting in ballet where the actors just do the mime with stiff faces and no eye-contact or bodylanguage. Here, they take it seriously, just look at them in the prologue and the first act and how they interact with one another. You can really believe they are a loving coupe and parents to Aurora. The same goes for all the dancers as well.In some of the other reviews they criticize the costumes, that they are over the top but I liked them alot. They give the show a really 18th century fairytale-ish feeling. The only two things that could have been better is the sets which I feel should have had some warmer colors instead of the sterile grey and white they’re in. The quality of the picture is also a bit unfocused, probably because this was originally taped for VCR.All in all it’s great DVD and, in my personal, humble opinion, the best Sleeping Beauty ballet.

I got this DVD along with the Nutcracker for my mom when she could no longer go to the ballet. That was ten years ago and I haven’t been able to watch until now because this one of the last DVD’s she watched before she passed. I have to say that I really enjoyed the Nutcracker much much more… that might have something to do with being more familiar with it’s music. Or it could be that at 78 minutes, Nutcracker was much shorter than the 132 minutes for Sleeping Beauty. I have to be honest and say that I could not get all the way through this one – I got to maybe around 100 minutes. As others have said, another reason for this was probably that it just looked drab. The other thing that bothered me was the DVD slip cover because it looked like it was printed on a home computer. I don’t know if that’s still the case, but it sure looks like it’s the same one in the photo.If you are not a ballet aficionado, I would skip this one for something more interesting.

Stylish Production..but not danced to a top level… a simplified performance with a number of omissions.Dowell just doesn’t convey the drama of Carabosseits all a bit careful, Royal Ballet doesn’t excite at all

この＜眠り＞の映像は、’94年にCovent Gardenで上演された際、収録された物。この公演はPetipa版を基本としているが、Ashton、Macmillan、Lopokovが改訂を加えている。以前はリージョン１のアイテムだったが、現在はオールリージョンの物になっているので、日本の再生機で再生可能である。チャプターは19個で、この作品にしては、やや少な目。この＜眠り＞の映像の最大の魅力は、なんと言っても、Princesse Auroreを演じるV.Duranteの圧倒的な名演技である。彼女の踊りの特徴は、その卓越した演劇性だろう。彼女が踊る時、彼女は、自分に与えられた振りをこなすだけでなく、その人物の心理状態、相対する人物、またその場面の状況に対して細やかな配慮を行き届かせており、踊りやマイム・芝居を含めた動きが、その人物の心理を緻密に表現する。彼女の踊りは、常に人物の感情の身体表現であり、舞踊家の技量を見せるソロですらそうである。彼女の踊りを見ていると、優れた俳優の台詞を聴いている様な感覚に陥る。しかしそれが可能なのは、彼女が磐石な舞踊技巧を持っているからで、その完璧な技巧が、彼女の表現を更に豊かな物にしている。DuranteのAuroreは、宮廷で全ての人々から愛され大切に育てられた、正しく＜深窓の姫君＞という形容がそのまま当て嵌まる実に可憐な王女だった。父国王から結婚を示唆された時に示す一瞬のときめきの表情が、抱き締めたくなる程愛らしい。L’OperaのA.Dupontと正に好対照である。しかし、４人の求婚者達を相手にRose Adagioを踊り始めると、その小柄な体躯を忘れさせる程、拡がりのある踊りを展開する（特にAttitude balanceは見事である）。また、腕・手・眼の使い方の見事な事。踊りとは全身を使って行われる物という模範である（３幕のGrand pas de deuxのVariationがその好例）。彼女は登場からAuroreとして存在し、そのペースは全幕に渡って維持されていた。特に１幕では、彼女の演劇性に富んだ踊りを十二分に堪能出来る。Prince FlorimundはZ.Solymosiによって演じられたが、役が彼のキャラクターに合っていないのか、何処となくぎこちない。踊りのスケールは大きく、決める所は決め、サポートも上手いが、彼の演技からFlorimundの姿が見えてこない。乱暴な言い方をすると、彼はDuranteの踊りのパートナーに留まっている。La fee du lilasのB.Husseinは、舞踊技巧の安定感にやや欠けるが、舞台全体を包み込む様な大らかな踊りと演技はこの役に相応しい。彼女はその高度な演技力で、的確に物語を進行させていく。DowellのCarabosseは伝統的な老女の妖精。その不気味な役造りと的を得た演技は、流石見事な物である。また、主役を演じても良い筈のL.BenjaminとE.PickfordがFlorinaとL’oiseau bleuに扮しスケールの大きなGrand pas de deuxを披露。これが図らずも、３幕のハイライトとなった。他のソリスト・群舞も丁寧に且つきびきびと踊り、良いアンサンブルを形成していた。踊りとは別な見所がその舞台美術。18世紀に建築や美術に屡用いられた騙し絵の技法を使った舞台装置が、18世紀の時代精神を感じさせる。国王・王妃・貴族の衣装・鬘は、厳密には18世紀のデザインではないが、その時代の衣装のデフォルメとして受け取れば、中々良く出来たものだった。＜眠り＞はCovent Gardenのレパートリーの中でも至宝の一つである。今後も作品の精神を維持しつつ、時代に合った良い＜眠り＞が制作される事を期待する。

ロイヤルバレエの華ヴィヴィアナ・デュランテとゾルタン・ソイモジーの眠れる森の美女です。デュランテは輝くようなオーロラ姫を演じております。ローズ・アダージオでのしっかりとしたバランスや技術、気品ある優雅な踊りはまさにオーロラ姫。1994年の上演なのでデュランテが27歳の頃のものです。ダウエルのカラボスも不気味でいい味を出しています。必見すべき点は踊りのほかにもあります。開幕と同時に舞台芸術にひかれます。不思議で、幻想的な雰囲気の舞台美術、衣装もそれぞれ凝っていて見るにも美しいものばかりです。第三幕結婚式の場面ではかわいいかぶりものをつけた童話の登場人物たちも登場しそれぞれが素敵な衣装をつけているので踊り以外の部分でも楽しめる要素が多いと思います。
