Blu-ray. The great Douglas Sirk (MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION) directed the third and final teaming of Claudette Colbert and Don Ameche, they first appeared together in Mitchell Leisen’s MIDNIGHT and later in Sam Wood’s THE GUEST WIFE. This Hitchcockian thriller casts Colbert as Alison Courtland, a wealthy New York socialite who awakens on a Boston-bound train with no memory of how she got there. A kind, elderly woman helps Alison call her husband Richard (Ameche), who in the meantime had contacted Detective Sgt. Strake (Raymond Burr, TV’s PERRY MASON) to help him find his missing wife. On the plane back home, Alison meets Bruce Elcott (Robert Cummings, THE DEVIL AND MISS JONES), who’s immediately enamored with her. Upon Alison’s return, Richard urges her to consult a psychiatrist, but the doctor’s bizarre behavior and abusive manner nearly drives Alison mad. Is she really losing her mind or is there an elaborate scheme at play? This classic film noir features wonderful atmospheric cinematography by Joseph A. Valentine (SHADOW OF a DOUBT, SABOTEUR) and stylish art direction by William Ferrari (Adam’s Rib). Co-starring the Beautiful Hazel Brooks (BODY AND SOUL).

Sleep, My Love. . . but beware of what lurks in the shadows
I’ve been watching black and whites all this week and by far this is my favorite. These old films are short and sweet and bring the action in a few short scenes. Filmmakers of this day should take note, no foul language or nudity but enough suspense and humor to keep one entertained. I have not seen Gaslight so the comparison will be the other way around, if I get to see it. I cannot compare but watching this film was a real treat, to see Ameche as the villain. The love interest, Daphne, was a bit harsh but expected when one is out for blood. I enjoyed the slick calm way the actors played their parts. Colbert, the beautiful but confused wife, not willing to believe foul play of her husband. Cummings was funny, caring and chivalrous. I felt anxious to see just who would do what next and that gave me a memory of watching the old Charlie Chan movies. The plot may not be altogether there but that is what the imagination is for, to fill in the blanks and it is still worth watching, . FDJALMY

So glad this movie was on DVD
I had found this movie on a free streaming classic movie platform. I’ve seen a lot of movies from the 1940s but have never heard of this one, much less seen it. It stars three of my favorites, Claudette Colbert, Don Ameche & Robert Cummings. Good story, good supporting actors and moves along nicely.I ordered this DVD because, with ten minutes left on the streaming platform, the picture pixilated badly and no sound. I’ve got to see how it ends!! Was so happy this movie was available on DVD.

    1940s romantic thriller
Pretty good old fashioned thriller in which Claudette Colbert is married to Don Ameche, who has a bimbo on the side and a plan to get free without giving up the money, while Robert Cummings schemes to save her. Bit similar plotwise to Gaslight, Julie. Midnight lace, etc. Contemporary when made, it’s got some great late 1940s fashions which, according to the filmakers, were common wear for ordinary women around the house. Very entertaining if you’re in the mood for stylized 1940s melodramas.

    I LOVE B&W movies
I tend to rate movies by what appeals to me. I LOVE B&W movies! There is something about the contrast and the shadows that is not available in color. I also enjoy watching the facial expressions actors used in older movies to convey emotion and/or reactions. In this movie the principal as well as supporting actors were engrossing. I have always had a preference for Claudette Colbert and I continue to marvel at how sneaky and believable Don Ameche was able to play the part of the predatory, greedy, yet stupid (so easily manipulated by the other woman), husband.I have seen this movie at least three times in my life and it is always entertaining.

What a treat to find a Douglas Sirk film on Instant Prime Video, there should be more! For fans of german filmmakers please search Fritz Lang as he has many films on Instant Prime Video. If you are a fan of melodrama and beautiful sets please watch this now. Watching Claudette Colbert (in an incredible performance) yell out Don Ameche’s characters name is hilarious!

    Better Thriller than “Dial M”
I’m not a huge fan of film noir, but I really did like “Sleep My Love.” Watching this film, especially with Robert Cummings in it, reminded me of “Dial M for Murder.” Both movies were suspenseful and had an excellent cast of characters. I really liked Robert Cummings as Bruce. I’ve always felt he was underrated as a dramatic actor. I was surprised to see Don Ameche playing a villain and I felt his performance was a little “stiff.” Claudette Colbert gave a fine performance but I felt she was a little too matronly for the part. I did like the addition of Key Luke as Bruce’s Chinese brother.
