The stuff that dreams are made of
Simply put, one of the most innovative and captivating films I’ve ever seen. The characters are much more dimensional than in mainstream studio flicks: underdogs, oddballs, pyschopaths, ordinary folks and everyone in between – just like real people you might already know. The performances hit all the right notes. From opening sequence to the perfect ending, the pride in craftmanship is impressive. Kudos to everyone involved in making this masterpiece. (By the way, I also highly recommend the soundtrack for this film. Though it’s quite delightful, you’ll have to go elsewhere for two tracks which featured prominently in trailers: “Your Heart is an Empty Room” by Death Cab for Cutie and “Fear of Sleep” by the Strokes. Would’ve liked if these came with..) Rest assured, you won’t have trouble staying awake to really get into this marvellous dream of sleep.

WOW – this show taught me a lot. I knew a few of the things, but some of the more recent research it covered was news to me. I found myself pausing the show at a few points to just think about what they were discussing. It was very interesting. I’d recommend it.

Starring Gael García Bernal, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Miou-Miou and Alain Chabat, the film stems from a bedtime story written by Sam Mounier, then 10 years old..The style and animation alone speaks to the entertainment value of ‘The Science of Sleep’ on its own; Stéphane, jaded by the experiences of a world not ready to embrace his creativity, is present in scenes both familiar to the average audience member and immeasurably bizarre. Because of this, the scenery changes between images that are grounded in reality and others that encapsulate the nature more commonly associated with imagination and dreams. Most impressively, these images are craftily juxtaposed to one another and the immerses viewers into the mind and psyche of a man finding it increasingly harder to distinguish between moments that are happening around him and happening within.We all know a Stéphane; generally speaking, these individuals are hastily labeled as ‘odd’ and shoved in to the metaphorical corners of our mind without so much as a second thought.These tendencies and the mistakes of doing so are explored in such a way that is raw and immeasurably powerful. On top of this, the audience becomes privy to the reason why Stéphane so boldly presents himself as an embodiment abnormality. It is learned early on that Stéphane has suffered a significant loss (No spoilers!) and that no amount of closure or validity has been granted to any feelings he has in regards to this. Primarily, Stéphane values these out-worldly experiences as a way to cope in a world that hasn’t been supportive in the way that he desires or needs. Secondly, these dreams and his imagination allows Stéphane to reconcile his expectations of his environment with the reality of it. Lastly, and maybe even most importantly, these dreams allow Stéphane to explore and process his emotions in a way that is met without judgement and rejection.Romance is a core part of this story but it does not determine the pace in which it moves nor is it unnecessarily doted upon; the relationship between Stéphane and Stéphanie – a next door neighbor that becomes the object of her affection – is introduced as casual in nature and develops over time as a friendship in a way that is logical and without a heavy hand. The audience is not forced to accept these two individuals as infatuated or being bound together by fate from the moment they eyes on one another, and in doing so the intimacy between them feels authentic and is easily related to.It is far too often we find that films with the spirit of ‘The Science of Sleep’ trip over their own grandiose absorption with complexity that it is ultimately pretentious and makes its audience feel jaded to the experience once it comes to an end.‘The Science of Sleep’, however, is an example of the beauty that is possible when information and original thought stays low to the ground as opposed to flying over the head. It is an awkward journey of self-discovery that forces its lens without an overzealous application. It values the absurdity of life that took easily slips through our fingers.There is no indication of the director’s motivation in creating this film, but perhaps it can help serve as a reminder that if we chase our dreams tenaciously enough they may eventually start to chase us in return.I would recommend!

great movie- HORRIFYING COPY
I was extremely disappointing in the quality of the copy I received from this seller. First of all, as soon as I took the plastic wrapping off of the case, it reeked like smoke. It was as if it was in a warehouse fire and retained the stench. The disc itself smelled even worse to the point that I was actually nervous to put it in my DVD player for fear of what would happen when the disc got hot. Based on my research, this stench typically indicates that the DVD is of some sort of bootleg quality- which makes sense because the cover art looked like it was printed from a home printer. I would have returned this to get my money back, but it was not worth the refund (probably 50% of the price since it was technically open) to leave the stinky thing in my house.Money in the garbage.

Love this movie. So crafty and creative and a really sweet/awkward/cool love story.
